If we recognise that there is no 'invisible hand' guiding science closer to truth, that the historical process of development of sciences is a contingent one open to determination in a variety of ways, then we can also imagine a transformation of science in harmony with the democratic aspirations of people. The way to do so is to lay sciences open to scrutiny.
