Gujarat Riots: Rushing to Judgment

Justice Nanavati's comments to the press on the nature of the Gujarat riots last year are premature. His 'clean chit' may result in all-round fear preventing people from coming forward to register their genuine grievances and losses.

Communal Riots in 2002

The year 2002 witnessed episodes of communal violence in widely dispersed parts of the country, though it was the carnage in Gujarat which shook the country and the world both because of the scale of the riots and the well established complicity of the government in them.

Gujarat Riots in the Light of the History of Communal Violence

The frequency with which communal holocausts have been taking place in India shows that there is something fundamentally wrong with our political system as well as our secular governance. The carnage in Gujarat did not occur suddenly and simply in reaction to what happened in Godhra. The Sangh parivar politically thrived only through hate politics, opposing everything that went in favour of minorities. Over the years it has created a mindset among the Hindus, who question not only the loyalty of minorities towards India but also consider them fundamentalist and fanatical, and the Hindus as liberal and secular.

Maharashtra: Able Handling of Recent Riots

Although there have been some serious communal incidents in the state, the government's able handling and that of local community leaders has played a significant role in limiting the damage. Only in the absence of community leadership as in Sholapur recently has the situation threatened to get out of control.

BJP's Defeat in Assembly Elections

The BJP's defeat in the four state assembly elections signified the voters' lack of enthusiasm towards emotive issues of temple and mosque. Instead, it was a decisive pointer of their anxiety on basic issues of development, poverty and unemployment. The elections thus showed that a democracy cannot be run by communalising the polity.

Communal Riots: Review of 2001

Malegaon and Kanpur witnessed the most serious communal disturbances in 2001, which also saw several other riots as in previous years. The average riot in the post-Babri masjid demolition period is not as horrifying as previous ones; however, this provides little comfort. The West Bengal government, which has succeeded in maintaining communal peace, should become a role model for other states so that we achieve the goal of total amity.

Malegaon Riots

The communal riots in Malegaon were the most serious in Maharashtra after the post-Babri masjid killings in the state in 1992-93. The riots have underscored once again the role of politicians in fanning communal tensions and the failure of the police and the administration to contain the violence in time and prevent it from spreading.

September 11: Many Messages

The terrorist attacks of September 11 hold major messages for the US, the rulers of Muslim countries and for terrorists who speak in the name of Islam.

Muslims and Education

The stereotypical definition of Muslim education ignores changing realities. Though institutions are plagued by a lack of resources, and madrasa education is still favoured by the poorer classes, the growing middle class including increasing numbers of women has increasingly turned to modern, secular education.

NDA: Electoral Performance and Future Strategies

The BJP finds itself in a serious bind as the UP elections approach. Should it take up the temple issue, as advocated by certain hardcore elements, it might risk losing the support of key allies at the centre. On the other hand, for the BJP to win the elections on its own looks increasingly onerous.

Communal Riots, 2000

The year 2000 witnessed several communal riots in diverse parts of India. These remained localised and did not result in the largescale devastation that had marked the riots of 1992-93. However, their occurrence should serve as a continual reminder that very often, innocuous incidents like a property dispute can easily take on communal colour; communal divides too can be easily stirred up by vested interests. More unfortunate has been the response of the civil authorities - who have either been accused of sheltering miscreants or else their response has been seen as belated and reactive.
