Focusing on the important aspects of social aberration and dysfunction, in the west, the history of crime and criminality is now assuming its place as an essential rubric in the social history of the community. In contrast the inadequacy of an integrated historiography of crime and public order in the Indian context has stood out sharply. The present paper seeks to fill the gap by constructing a quantified chronology of crime and criminality between 1864-1912 covering Bengal proper and each of its five revenue administration divisions.
