This paper evaluates the trends of fiscal devolution and the finances of the urban local bodies in Telangana. The functional devolution process and implementation procedures are incomplete despite the implementation of the 74th Constitutional Amendment Act. The municipal financial indicators are not progressive in comparison with many other states. Own revenues of the ULBs are not sufficient to manage the expenditures of the ULBs. There is no significant increase in the total revenues of the ULBs despite increasing expenditures. The expenditure of the ULBs shows a higher proportion of the revenue expenditure compared to the capital expenditure.

The conceptual delineation of “spatial compression” in critical writings of Karl Marx and David Harvey is mapped to explain how contemporary capitalist practices use “time” creatively to overcome the spatial constraints to profit-making. The insights drawn from the discussions are used to examine the rapid expansion of Amazon India, primarily achieved through its network of warehouses—a spatial construct. Thus the tangible manifestations of restructuring time and space in the present-day capitalist landscape of India are analysed.

Shashikant Ahankari was the driving force behind the Health and Auto Learning Organization, a social movement aimed at creating sustained and affordable access to formal healthcare for the poor across rural Maharashtra. He was instrumental in providing several pioneering models of rural healthcare and public health interventions in India. His cadres of Bharat Vaidya village health workers created in the aftermath of the Latur earthquake in 1993, were to find resonance in the form of accredited social health activist workers in due course.

Political parties are gearing up for the 2024 general elections, and the recent assembly elections in Karnataka have provided a template for the opposition parties to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party. The success of the campaign pivoted on incubating and empowering local leadership as against the centralisation of power and high-handedness within the party.

Owing to both internal (skewed production and export basket) and external (rising imports, growing competition) challenges, India’s share in global tea exports is gradually declining. In this context, brand building and stricter compliance with global norms by the Indian players are necessary.

The recent cash assistance scheme called the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai for eligible female household heads, announced by the Tamil Nadu government, is a significant policy intervention aimed at further strengthening women’s agency. Some of the implementation challenges that the scheme is likely to face are discussed while categorising the female beneficiaries within the households. The estimates from the Tamil Nadu Household Panel Survey’s Pre-Baseline Survey, 2018‒19 are used to bring out the representativeness of the female population within the households. An equal amount of state investment in other aspects of gender inequality is called for.
