Visiting Scholars Program 2017

Overview: The Visiting Scholar Programme (VScP) has been instituted at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) as one of its outreach activities with the objective of supporting quality Ph.D research being conducted by students and junior faculty members of colleges and universities in India. The scholarship will enable up to four selected scholars to spend three months at a stretch at IGIDR to work on a research proposal related to their ongoing Ph.D dissertation and which can be satisfactorily completed during their stay. Selected researchers can join the programme anytime between August 14, 2017 and January 31, 2018.

Eligibility: At the time of application, applicants should possess a Masters degree in any field, be conducting research as a registered Ph.D. scholar for at least one year, and working on a topic broadly involving any area of economics including energy and environmental policy. Applicants are required to submit their (i) curriculum vitae (CV) (ii) a research proposal(iii) a brief statement of purpose clearly outliningthe research plans at IGIDR and how the fellowship will benefit their ongoing research particularly in terms of faculty inputs,and (iv) two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from the concerned Ph.D. supervisorin the case of a Ph.D. student, and the principal of the College/University in the case of a junior faculty member. Recommendation letters should clearly give the contact details of thereferees. Candidates should also mention in the application the preferred three-month period of stay at IGIDR.

Research Proposal: The proposal should focus on theoretical/empirical analysis ofeconomic issues including those related to energy and environment. It should be strictly within 1,500 words, and its scope should be such that the project can be completed in three months. The research proposal should be accompanied by a signed certification by the applicant as well as by the concerned thesis supervisor/Principal, stating that the research proposal is ongoing original Ph.D dissertation of the applicant, and has not been submitted to any journal for publication.
Selection will be based on (i) a short listing of applicants based on a joint evaluation of the CV, letters of recommendation and the quality of the research proposal submitted at the time of application, and (ii) a personal interview of short-listed applicants via Skype.

Emoluments: Selected scholars will be paid a stipend of Rs.17,000/- per month, reimbursed to and fro three-tier AC train fare, and provided free accommodation on campus for their duration of stay.
Requirements: Selected scholars will be required to (i) present the research proposal within seven days of joining the programme (ii) present a a progress report of the research project at the end of six weeks and (iii) submit a complete research report along with a seminar presentation of the research findings at the end of the three-month stay. Lack of satisfactory progress at the end of six weeks, as deemed by the Programme Committee may lead to the termination of the fellowship programme. Once the research project is completed and published, the scholar should acknowledge IGIDR in an appropriate way as will be indicated to them by IGIDR upon selection/joining.

Application Deadline & Notifications: Applications can be sent electronically or by post to reach IGIDR by June 30, 2017. Letters of recommendation should be sent by the concerned persons directly to IGIDR via email/post by the respective last date for application. The subject head for email and top of the envelope for post should indicate APPLICATION FOR VISITING SCHOLARS PROGRAM 2017. Shortlisted applicants will be notified via email by July 14, 2017 and will have to appear for a personal interview via Skype in the third week of July 2017. Candidates selected for the programme will be notified by July end, 2017 and selected candidates will have to accept the offer within seven days of its receipt.
