The Derozio Affair

Hindu College was set up in Calcutta in 1817 as a pioneering institution to impart Western learning to its students. In 1831, its most outstanding teacher, Henry Louis Vivian Derozio, then only 22 years old, was compelled to resign. A look at the circumstances that forced his resignation attempts to reconstruct Derozio's ideas and his teaching methods. The episode offers a glimpse of the intellectual ambience of early 19th-century Calcutta.

Two Responses to 1857 in the Centenary Year

The centenary of the revolt of 1857 saw the publication of two outstanding books on the uprising. One, by S N Sen, was officially sponsored by the government of India and the other by S B Chaudhuri was independently researched and published. This essay seeks to contrast the approach and the emphasis of the two books, both of which were written under the influence of nationalism. The authors used and read the existing archives very differently and tried to come to terms with the idea that the uprising was a war of independence.

OBITUARY- Ashin Das Gupta (1932-1998)

Ashin Das Gupta (1932-1998) Rudrangshu Mukherjee ASHIN DAS GUPTA, who died in Calcutta on June 4 after a protracted illness, was born on August 22, 1932. He studied in Mitra School in Bhowanipore and then at Presidency College. He read science at the intermediate level and decided to shift to history honours, It was while studying history that his brilliance came to its own. He took firsts in his BA and MA examinations and took a PhD from the University of Cambridge where he was at Fitzwilliam College.
